*NEW* Most-Played…ESC winners

Hello there. Long-ish time, no see! Today I’m adding another kind of post to my repertoire, which may or may not go down as well as the rest do or do not…do. Anyway, it’s the first in a new series called Most-Played (I bet you didn’t see that coming) which has come to be with a little help from iTunes. Every now and then I’ll be presenting you with a list of my personal MPs – all part of a Eurovision-themed category, of course – and asking/pleading/begging etc for you to share your own. I’d love it if you’d humour me on those occasions, starting right now with my most frequented winning songs. I’ve got to admit, I was a little surprised by some of the songs that came up, especially since I recently completed my top 50 which looked very different in terms of the champions. I can only blame shuffle and my ever-changing tastes, I suppose…

#1 | Everyway That I Can by Sertab Erener (Turkey 2003)

I can’t remember ever skipping over this when it came up in shuffle. One whiff of the opening riff (poem unintended) and you just know it’s time to roll up your shirt and do some impromptu belly-dancing whilst your dog watches on and wonders if you’re having an epileptic fit. Or is that just me?

As a result of Sertab’s performance, scientists concluded that her hips are just as truthful as Shakira’s

#2 | Satellite by Lena (Germany 2010)

#3 | Wild Dances by Ruslana (Ukraine 2004)

#4 | Fångad Av En Stormvind by Carola (Sweden 1991)

Although I wouldn’t call this my all-time favourite winner at the minute, I’ll always have a special place for it in my heart music collection, as it won Eurovision the year I was born. Being a September baby, it wasn’t the first winner of my lifetime, but I refuse to acknowledge the song that was. All I will say on that is whyyyyy meeeeeeeee?

Carola was confused as to whether she’d been captured by a stormwind, or if somebody just turned the wind machine up too high

#5 | Believe by Dima Bilan (Russia 2008)

#6 | Dansevise by Grethe & Jørgen Ingmann (Denmark 1963)

#7 | Hard Rock Hallelujah by Lordi (Finland 2006)

Apart from bedroom belly-dancing, there are few things I love more than rocking out to the monstrous winner of 2006 with absolutely no holds barred and no shame. When you’re a pop music aficionado there are so few occasions on which you can let loose like that, so I’d like to thank Lordi for the music – the most hardcore music you’ll ever be able to associate with yours truly.

‘…you are the wiiiind beneath my wiiiiings…er, I mean, HAGGGGHFAAAGHRRAAAH!’

#8 | Molitva by Maria Šerifović (Serbia 2007)

#9 | Poupee De Cire, Poupee De Son by France Gall (Luxembourg 1965)

#10 | Insieme: 1992 by Toto Cutugno (Italy 1990)

#11 | Fairytale by Alexander Rybak (Norway 2009)

#12 | My Number One by Helena Paparizou (Greece 2005)

Greece’s lone winning song is hardly a groundbreaking one, but it definitely makes me want to smash some china (something my mother does not appreciate). It’s also a great sing-along song, so when I’m all exhausted from a) hip-shaking to Sertab and b) head-banging to Lordi, I can just collapse on the floor and mouth the lyrics. Relaxing!

‘Now here’s one I prepared earlier…’

#13 | Hold Me Now by Johnny Logan (Ireland 1987)

#14 | Ein Bisschen Frieden by Nicole (Germany 1982)

#15 | Een Beetje by Teddy Scholten (Netherlands 1959)

#16 | Tu Te Reconnaîtras by Anne-Marie David (Luxembourg 1973)

Admittedly, both this version and the English version Wonderful Dream combine to make this winner one of my most-played, but the fact that the English version is just as listenable has to count for something. I think this is one of the more timeless victors of Eurovision’s earlier days.

I wonder if Anne-Marie’s wonderful dream featured her as a talk-show host?

#17 | Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi by Celine Dion (Switzerland 1988)

#18 | Running Scared by Ell/Nikki (Azerbaijan 2011)

Trust me, I’m as shocked as you are to see that, out of 50+ winners, this is among my 20 most-played. I suppose, as a song that you might just happen to listen to, it comes across better than it does as a song that won Eurovision (all those times I said I was over it, I lied).

‘Have you ever considered a career as an armchair, Ell?’

#19 | Love Shine A Light by Katrina and the Waves (United Kingdom 1997)

#20 | Hallelujah by Milk & Honey (Israel 1979)

How do your most-played winning songs compare to mine? Let me know below

ok so I’m kind of lost with the replies in this post now xD

@Nick: *blushes* no, no they are far from amazing, but thank you very much :O
btw I agree on everything you said about euroband! I love those remixes too and if they count I guess I have Israel 1978 a lot higher.
    Do you use twitter?
and I guess Jaz was being sarcastic about the Dima Bilan comment.

@Jaz: “Paying attention is for losers” That shall from now on be my motto xD
Hey there’s nothing wrong with diggiloo diggiley…It’s just too funny and it makes me smile…whereas Suus just makes me go “ewww” 😛
About La la la…The versions are quite different, but yeah, the lala’s are the same except for the ones at the start xD
Oh and listen to the euroband remixes, they ara amazing…I don’t know if the link to the rar file is stilla round on the internet,
but if you can’t find it I can upload it for you.
I uploaded their cover of “Ne partez pas sans moi” to youtube:

(awful video quality, but hey it was 4 years ago xD)

You’re totally welcome. They’re a lot better than mine, at least.

I do use Twitter! My username is @nprovenghi15. I absolutely LOVE those remixes. Those, along with their actual entry, easily make Euroband my favorite entrant from the past five years. And yes, she probably was being sarcastic.

On a completely different note, if Sweden is still interested in winning in 2013, they should seriously consider sending these girls.

So how many t-shirts do you want with ‘paying attention is for losers’ printed on them?? I’m taking orders.

So ‘Suus’ should be ‘SEWWWS’ and ‘Diggiloo Diggiley’ should be ‘DiggilEWWW Diggiley’, in our separate books. Actually, I don’t find the Herreys that bad. I do like their golden shoes.

Hi Jaz writing this in class because I’m so responsible and I know my priorities 😛 Anyway, I’m shocked you don’t have euphoria in your list. There are sons songs that will never be on my most played list because I simply don’t listen to them anymore (aka Celine Dion, Ell & Nikki and so on).
I do have Sertab’s and Ruslana’s in my top 5 most listened winner entries. The most plated is Helena Paparizou’s and then Dima Bilan’s. I can’t check it right now, but I’ll surelly post my list later.
Ps: I like nprovenghi271’s (sorry, I don’t know your name xD) idea of the non eurovision songs from your favorite esc country. That would be interesting to read (and maybe to write about if I get some time)
Pss: the armchair comment is the funniest thing I’ve read in a while xD

Thanks for that! By the way, my name’s Nick. I don’t even know if I’ve said that before, so your confusion is understandable. I’ve actually read your blog a little and it’s really good! Keep it up.
Oh and I totally agree about the armchair. Made me laugh out loud.

Hi again Jaz 😀 here’s my list (finally xD) I barely have more than 10 winning entries on my iTunes library.

Spain 1968: I don’t know if i should count this one since the one I have is the original catalan version and not the actual song that went to eurovision..but still, let’s say it counts 😛

      10 Israel 1978
      9 Netherlands 1975
      8 Sweden 1974
      7 Serbia 2007
      6 Sweden 1984
      5 Turkey 2003
      4 Uk 1997
      3 Ukraine 2004
      2 Russia 2008
      1 Greece 2005

There’s a difference of 4 plays between Greece 2005 and Russia 2008 btw..

@nprovenghi271: *waves* Hi Nick…nice to meet you (and know your name xD).. And thanks a lot for reading 😀

@Annika Hi to you too! *waves back* And don’t mention it! Thanks for making a great blog.

I had the same problem of scraping winners together. I only had 11 plus the three remixes downloaded, so I just decided to add the song I’d listened to the most on YouTube, which I assumed was Sweden 1999. I think the difference between “Satellite” and “Fairytale” was about 20 or 25, I don’t know.

P.S. Your Photoshop skills are amazing. I only wish mine were that good.

Awww, am I seeing a friendship blossoming?? Your couple name pretty much writes itself (Annicka, obviously). Jokes jokes.
I have a lot of winners in my library, but not so many on my iPod. Up until recently I refused to delete any ESC-related material from it, I don’t know why (perhaps because the Eurovision playlist was so impressive) but suddenly I decided to just weed out the crap, which does exist as we know.

PS – Sorry to intrude on you and Annika’s acquainting session ;D

Yeah, Spain counts! The las are all the same, right??

‘Diggi-loo Diggi-ley’?? Really?? Ahaha. If I can have ‘Suus’ in my top 50 I suppose you can have that.

I have to say I am shocked and horrified to discover Dima’s winner in your list. I never saw that coming.

        Don’t worry! It’ll be fine.

I’m the worst with “I Wanna” at my number nine most-played spot. Honestly, I’m a bit surprised at “Believe”‘s place on my list too. I think that it took the winning spot from better entries that year, specifically Iceland, San Marino and Portugal, in my opinion.

However, aren’t you both Bilan fans? I’m a little confused now.

S’if uni lectures are for anything but doing irrelevant stuff! Paying attention is for losers XD

I think ‘Euphoria’ isn’t on my list just because it’s more recent. I have listened to it more than any other song of 2012 I think, counting watching MF and such.

So we’re all agreed: Ell should become a lounge chair. He’d make a better one of those than he did a Eurovision winner (or host for that matter).

Starting from the bottom: yes. A special armchair for cougars who can’t sing well.

I think that my most-listened spot is filled by Germany. It was actually my number three this year.

Well, so are most high school classes. Wish I was at school while writing this so I could prove my point.

Like this list. First off, if that poem was an accident, then you’re Ralph Siegel in disguise. Now I haven’t dug as deep as most people, so I only have about 15 songs in my iTunes (I thought I had more). Further complicating things, my iTunes is all messed up and doesn’t have the right play counts, so the ranking is a bit of a guess.

    1. Lena – Satellite (DE 2010)
    2. Alexander Rybak – Fairytale (NO 2009)
    3. Ell | Nikki – Running Scared (AZ 2011) (Oh it’ll never end. Not for you, me or anyone else.)
    4. Loreen – Euphoria (SE 2012)
    5. Tanel Padar, Dave Benton & 2XL – Everybody (EE 2001)
    6. The Olsen Brothers – Fly on the Wings of Love (DK 2000)
    7. Sertab Erener – Everyway that I Can (TK 2003)
    8. Helena Paparizou – My Number One (GR 2005)
    9. Marie N – I Wanna (LV 2002) (This is my shame.)
    10. Dima Bilan – Believe (RU 2008)
    11. Marija Šerifović – Molitva (RS 2007)
    12. Céline Dion – Ne Partez pas Sans Moi (CH 1988) (Euroband Remix)
    13. Take Me to Your Heaven – Charlotte Nilsson (SE 1999)
    14. Hold Me Now – Johnny Logan (IE 1987) (Euroband Remix)
    15. Bucks Fizz – Making Your Mind Up (UK 1981) (Euroband Remix)

Another similarity! The first winners of our lifetimes were both dull Irish things, as being born January 1996 gave me “The Voice.” The winners surrounding us were so much better, don’t you think? Anyway, I think that a good idea would be a list of your favorite non-Eurovision songs from your favorite Eurovision country, if that makes sense.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! You haff discovered my secret. I AM Siegel, in a girl suit. After ‘The Social Network Song’ got such a bad wrap I had to go into hiding, and possessing the body of someone else seemed like the easiest option.

‘I Wanna’ at #9. Where do I start? Well, at least you admitted it’s your shame. If I could kill that song, I would.

I have never heard these Euroband remixes. Must get on to that.

Oh thank God, you can empathise with the plight of being brought into the world before a dodgy Irish winner. The winners on either side were SO much better. ‘Fangad…’ and ‘In Your Eyes’ are up there with my favourites. So is ‘Nocturne’. ‘Love Shine A Light’ not so much, but it’s still good.

PS – Cheers for the idea. I will take it on board!!

All those hours of CSI:Miami have paid off! Wonderful. ;^)

I don’t even know how it happened. If I could take it back, I probably would.

Those remixes are amazing! In fact, the one for “Making Your Mind Up” is actually in Icelandic, so, in a way, we have a Eurovision song in Icelandic in the 21st Century! And, in my opinion, Euroband was totally robbed in 2008. “This is my Life” is my favorite song of the past five years.

Love “Nocturne.” Love “Love Shine a Light” (Don’t like that awkward sentence). Bored by “The Voice.”

Cool! I’ll look forward to it!
